Yoram Yasur Blume: “Photophobia, for example, refers to a visual problem where light can lead to inflammation or pupil dilation.”

In general, phobias arise from a traumatic experience.

In this sense, it may happen that a person who in their childhood had been scratched by a rabid cat. End up being ailurophobia, i.e., phobic to that type of animal.

However, there is an extensive list of phobias, many well-known and others not so much that are surprising.

“Among the most common phobias are agoraphobia (whose symptom is the fear of public places). Arachnophobia (fear of spiders), acrophobia (fear of heights). And claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces).”

Instead, terms like xenophobia or homophobia can’t be framed within the field of medicine. Because they are associated with a negative attitude toward certain category of people.

Despite the high incidence of phobias among the population,

Very few people go to the doctor for treatment or seek professional help.

A person with a phobia tends to avoid situations or objects that make them feel anxious. But this often causes the phobia to be worse as time passes.

Instead of creating situations to avoid the cause of our phobia, it is better to face that fear.

Experts say it is more likely that a phobia disappears if the cause was a stressful or traumatic event.

But even when the cause has no apparent logic, it is possible to offer help to the person suffering from a phobia.

With this, the person learns to know all about the object or situation that is the source of their fear and how to change their behavior.
